Nathaniel J. Himmel, PhD

Principal Investigator

Nate recieved his undergraduate degrees in biology at Santa Fe Community College and the University of Florida. After working for 2 years as a technician in the lab of Mitsi Blount (Emory University, Atlanta, GA, USA), he then completed a PhD in Neuroscience in the lab of Daniel N. Cox, at Georgia State University (Atlanta, GA, USA) where he was funded by a Ruth L. Kirschstein National Research Service Award (F31), a fellowship from the Brains & Behavior Program, and a Kenneth W. and Georganne F. Honeycutt Fellowship. He then traveled to Switzerland, funded by a Human Frontiers Science Program Long-Term Fellowship, to do postdoctoral research at l'Université de Lausanne, in the lab of Richard Benton.

WE ARE HIRING FOR FALL 2026

The lab is recruiting team members intersted in any and all core research areas. If interested, please read below.

  • Technician: The lab will be hiring a full-time technician to support our molecular biology and insect programs. Please check back for the official job posting in summer/fall 2026.
  • Undergraduates: The lab will open to undergraduates in fall 2026; any current NJIT or Rutgers undergraduates may contact the lab for more details.
  • Masters: The lab will open to Master's project/thesis students in fall 2026; please check back in fall 2026 for details.
  • PhD: The lab is actively recruiting PhD students. Please review the requirements for the PhD in Biology. The deadline for applications (to start fall 2027) will be in December 2026. Please feel free to send an email for more information.
  • Postdocs: The lab will support postdocs in applying for independent funding (e.g. NIH F32 or K99, HFSP Long-Term Fellowships, EMBO postdoc fellowships, and so on). The lab is open to any relevant project an aspiring postdoc wishes to lead. Please send an email expressing your interest, and include a CV.
